And the Mahdi will not emerge until there is a tribulation in which Iraq is churned like tanned leather, and the Levant is split like hair, and Egypt is ravaged like a dung beetle, and the Jazira is shaken by its hand and foot, and they will find no refuge nor escape, and their hearts will die as their bodies die. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his family, said: "Four tribulations will occur after me: the first, in which blood will be shed; the second, in which blood and wealth will be deemed lawful; the third, in which blood, wealth, and chastity will be deemed lawful; and the fourth, a deaf, blind, overwhelming tribulation, churning like the churning of waves in the sea, so that no one will find refuge from it. It will surround the Levant, engulf Iraq, and shake the Jazira by its hand and foot. The Ummah will be churned in it with affliction like tanned leather, and then no one will be able to say 'Stop, stop.' If they push it away from one side, it will burst forth from another side." And he said, peace be upon him and his family: "Four tribulations will come to you after me; the fourth is the deaf, blind, overwhelming tribulation, in which the Ummah will be churned with affliction like tanned leather, until good is denied and evil is recognized.
