I finished writing this study five years ago, in 1951. At that time, I felt that there were aspects that needed further investigation and research. I was unable to pursue them due to a lack of sources on the one hand, and the unavailability of investigation capabilities. I had hoped to delve deeper into the study of the Sanusi in Cyrenaica, to learn more about the Sanusi angles and the places that witnessed the history of the movement, and to study on the ground the spread of Sanusism in Africa, and to find sources that shed new light on the history of the founder of the movement in Algeria, Morocco, and the Hejaz. I had hoped to be able to address some of these aspects, or all of them, with further investigation and research in the near future, but a number of preoccupations delayed me from doing so. I hesitated after this period to proceed with publishing the study. This period was sufficient to convince me of the necessity of reconsidering it in light of new information, and of any ideas that have occurred to me, or developed or changed. Furthermore, the saying of Al-Imam Al-Isfahani urged me: "If you see that a person does not write a book in his day, he says on the next day: If this were changed, it would be better, and if so-and-so were added, it would be improved..." But this did not convince me to keep the study hidden among my papers, because I felt that once I had finished writing it, it no longer concerned me alone. And the encouragement of a number of friends who were familiar with it prompted me to release it. So, the opinion led me to publish it without modification, to contribute to shedding light on a period of Libya's history, and I promise myself once again to return to the subject after a while to follow up and complete it, and God is the giver of success.
