The Minister of Grievances said, "We seek help from God, and we begin with His praise. We pray for blessings upon His Messenger. O God, poets are inspired by their intelligence and are accustomed to composing verses. This is not a criticism of any learned person or poet, but rather the art of poetry is limited to its meanings, and it is not permissible in poetry to present what is obscure to the understanding. When that happens, its beauty is diminished and its appeal is lost." Al-Asma'i said, "The number of masters of poetry is less than two hundred." Abu Amr ibn al-'Ala' said, "Poets are rarer than red sulfur. The poets of our time do not possess the refined words and obscure meanings that the ancients used in their poems. People do not memorize them except with difficulty, and they are eager to inquire about their meanings. This is due to the lack of learned scholars who explain them, especially in our time. Al-Jahiz said, 'The time of poetry has passed, except for Al-Asma'i.' He said, 'I asked Al-Akhfash about poetry, and he only knew its grammar.' I asked him about its meaning, and he said, 'It is only found in what is connected to it.' If you want to find it, you will only find it with the help of scholars like Ibn Wahb and others, who have explained and clarified it, and refined it, such as Hajib Dawla.
