In it, we will follow this return journey in its most important events twice, according to the places where Ibn Tumart stopped.
The starting point of the march: 1 The sources differed in determining the date of Ibn Tumart's return to Morocco. Ibn al-Athir places this return before the year 1111 AH / 505 AD, mentioning that in this year he stopped in Mahdia on the return journey. Al-Zarkashi postpones this to the year 1120 AH / 514 AD, saying: "He headed to Morocco after staying in the East for five years, and it was said in Ifriqiya." Ibn Abi Zar' says: "His journey was from the lands of the East on the first day of the blessed Rabi' al-Awwal of the year 510 AH." If we exclude what Ibn al-Athir went with, as it is not acceptable for the return journey to take nine full years, considering that his arrival in his village was in the year 1120 AH / 514 AD, as we will explain. Then the most likely date for the Mahdi's return to his country is the year 1116 AH / 510 AD, as mentioned by Ibn Abi Zar', precisely by day and month. This date can be reconciled with what Al-Zarkashi mentioned by considering the first as the date of the journey's beginning and the second as the date of arrival. This is because Ibn Tumart used to stay for some time in the cities and villages he passed through, enjoining good and forbidding evil. This is supported by what Ibn al-Qattan mentioned, that his arrival in Bejaia was in the year 511 AH / 512 AD, and what Ibn al-Qalanisi mentioned, that his arrival in Derna was in the year 512 AH / 513 AD.
