This narrative then becomes the most likely one. The birth date of Ibn Tumart has been a subject of great disagreement among historians. Attempting to determine it requires comparing and investigating different narratives and conflicting opinions. To arrive at the truth, this determination must be based on three essential elements presented by the documents at hand.
The first element: what some historians mentioned about determining the Mahdi's age at his death. Ibn al-Qattan mentioned that "his age, may God be pleased with him, was about fifty years." Ibn Idhari followed him in this. In "Mafakhir al-Barbar," it is stated that the Mahdi died at the age of fifty-five (sic) years. Ibn al-Athir said: "Then the Mahdi died, and he was fifty-one years old, and it was said fifty-five years old." Al-Nuwayri followed him in this.
The second element: what some historians mentioned about dates determining the Mahdi's birth time. Ibn Khallikan mentioned that "his birth was on the day of Ashura in the year four hundred and eighty-five." Al-Zarkashi stated that "the Imam was born in the year four hundred and ninety-one." Ibn al-Khatib said that "his birth was in the year four hundred and ninety-six." Ibn al-Qunfudh mentioned that "Mabrugha was born in the year four hundred and seventy-one." And Ibn al-Qunfudh followed him.
