He was one of the most revered and learned scholars of the region in jurisprudence. He died in Timbuktu. His book, "Al-Ibtihaj bi-Tathir al-Diyaj," is a biography of the prominent scholars and men of the region, including Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di (d. 1096 AH), the author of "Tarikh al-Sudan." He also wrote "Tadhkirat al-Nisyan fi Akhbar al-Sudan." Sheikh Uthman dan Fodio, a leader of the Fulani tribes and the Islamic mission in West Africa in the late 18th century, wrote many books on jurisprudence, including "Ihya al-Sunnah wa Ihya al-Bid'ah." His brother, Sheikh Abdullahi, also wrote extensively, including "Kitab Zayn al-Waraqat." He was translated into French by the Persian Orientalist Houdas and published by the Paris School of Oriental Languages in 1900 in separate Arabic and French editions. UNESCO reprinted it in 1964 in one volume containing both Arabic and French editions. Houdas translated it into French, annotated it, and introduced it. The General Administration of Culture at Al-Azhar published it in 1970, and it was verified by the honorable Sheikhs Taha al-Sakit, Hafiz Muhammad al-Layth, and Abd al-Rahim Marzuq al-Tandawi of Al-Azhar. The University of Ibadan Press in Nigeria published it in 1977. It was verified, translated into English, introduced, and annotated by the English Orientalist M. Hiskett, Professor at the University of London and Deputy Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies, formerly of the School of Oriental Studies.
