This paragraph concludes the thirty-seventh chapter of "Tarikh al-Sudan" according to the division introduced by the Orientalist Houdas. However, al-Sa'di returned three years later and added a new chapter, the thirty-eighth, whose events conclude on March 21, 1656 (Jumada al-Ula 1066 AH).
On Sunday, the sixteenth of Rabi' al-Thani, a letter arrived from Commander Yahya bin Ali al-Habali to Pasha Ahmad bin Ahmad bin Sa'dun, stating that Sultan Mawlay Ahmad al-Shaykh died on the twenty-second of Rabi' al-Awwal in the year 951 AH, and his son Sultan Mawlay Abd al-Malik succeeded him at that time. His reign was auspicious and blessed. On the sixteenth of Jumada al-Ula, a dispatch arrived from Commander Uthman bin Abd al-Aziz al-Faraji in Jenne, with the help of God Almighty and His support.
On that date, al-Sa'di would have been close to sixty-one years old by the Hijri calendar (56 solar years). It is likely that he did not live much longer after that, otherwise he would have continued to add a new chapter to "Tarikh al-Sudan." Thus, although al-Sa'di began preparing "Tarikh al-Sudan" long after Mahmud Kati began preparing "Tarikh al-Fattash," and although Mahmud Kati died about two years before al-Sa'di's death, the events of "Tarikh al-Sudan" conclude about ten years before the events of "Tarikh al-Fattash." This is because Mahmud Kati, although he lived a long life, exceeding eighty-five years by the Hijri calendar, did not complete his book. Rather, one of his descendants completed it after him. The date of "Tarikh al-Fattash" indeed refers to events going up to 1550 CE (957 AH).
