The morning came, and many people were greeting the king while I was sitting with him. He rejoiced at them, honored them, and gave them fine clothes, and they were pleased with that. And when we wanted to depart, their chief said, "We advise you, if you see lions on your way, do not be afraid, because all the lions you see are from this region." The king said, "In that case, we want to hear from some of your companions now." He replied, "We hear and obey." Then he appointed three of their young men, naming them, and they went into the wilderness. They were gone for a while, then we heard the roar of a great lion that terrified hearts and frightened the animals. They said, "This is the voice of so-and-so," and they named him. Then he fell silent. And after a short while, three roars were heard, and they said, "This is so-and-so," and they named him. Then he fell silent, and after that, a roar was heard, greater than the previous two, so much so that hearts almost leaped out of their chests upon hearing it. They said, "This is the voice of so-and-so," and they named him, and he was the greatest of them. Then, after a very short while, and in their human form, they kissed the king's hand. He rejoiced at them, honored them, and clothed them in luxurious garments. We bid them farewell and departed. The king said, "These are the people who brought us onions and cucumbers. And we, and the last of the Fartit people, and what follows these wonders is what the diviners say when they strike under the sand. They say things that have happened to people that only God Almighty knows, and they speak of matters."
