The month of Ramadan began on Monday, completing the month of Sha'ban, which God Almighty extended. Then, the army marched, or rather, on the third Saturday, the twenty-third day of Jumada al-Ula, it set out. We landed on that day at Jazirat Zanna as well and stayed there for twenty days, awaiting some of the Bashir's men. We departed from there on Thursday, the twelfth day of Jumada al-Akhirah, heading towards the land of Sab, to address what the rebellious Bashir and Tuareg had corrupted. They refused, along with some of the Abyssinians, who had advised them not to heed his call because he was treacherous. The grief over the killing of Ibrahim al-Rawaq was still in their hearts and remained so. Then the commander of Kaga came with a group of the Nuba. They had come out of the city. Then they disagreed, and he returned. They did not agree to fight openly, as they had done before. They claimed that the commander Rayi' (who was with them on one occasion, and they had killed his brother, Commander Muhammad al-Kush, and those who were with him) was on his way to Kaga, and now they wanted to bring them to him in this great month.
