The regions of North and East Sudan were nominally under the administration of the Funj government, which found no firm ground for its authority in these two regions, so it did not exercise any real and effective control over them. The rule of Sinnar over North and East Sudan was merely nominal. This paved the way for Sayyid Muhammad Uthman to control affairs in these regions and to win the day in his favor. We have previously seen during our description of Al-Mirghani's journey within Sudan that the only areas where Al-Mirghani did not achieve significant presence for his call were those where he faced harassment from the ruling authorities in those regions. This happened in Kordofan in West Sudan, where he and his disciples were harmed by Al-Maqdum Muslim. He faced the same problem in Sinnar, where the minister, Wad Al-Arbab, harassed him and worked to disperse the people around him.

One of the most important reasons for Al-Mirghani's success was his great success in gaining the support and endorsement of the economic class. Commercial personalities known for their wealth and extensive funds joined him. Among these personalities were Khalifa Muhammad Salih Shadul from the Al-Khandaq region, a number of Al-Badiriya, and some individuals from the Jalaba Tariqa.

In addition to their support, Al-Mirghani enjoyed great support from families with religious influence in their regions. Al-Mirghani worked to win over the major religious houses, and he succeeded in his endeavor, as symbols of ancient and respected religious families stood by him. These personalities bestowed upon him unparalleled personal and popular support. Among the clearest families that followed Al-Mirghani and pledged allegiance to him was the Suwar Al-Dhahab family, which transitioned from the Qadiriya Tariqa to the Khatmiyya. Another important reason that led to Al-Mirghani's widespread success in Sudan was Al-Mirghani's personality itself. Muhammad Uthman was known to be a scholar proficient in his knowledge and a Sufi aware of the states and goals of Sufism. The spiritual talents that converged in Muhammad Uthman enabled him to gain people's trust and love, and their eagerness to gain his satisfaction and join his Tariqa. Likewise, the distinguished history of Muhammad Uthman's family suggests that he resembled the predecessors from his family. The people of Sudan were aware of the status and position of Al-Mirghani's family.
