The Mahdist army, under the command of Osman Digna, was defeated at the Battle of Omdurman. The Khalifa Abdullahi, the Mahdist leader, fled the city with a small band of followers. He was pursued by the Anglo-Egyptian forces and eventually cornered and killed in the battle of Umm Diwaykarat.
