The Mahdist army, under the command of Osman Digna, was defeated at the Battle of Atbara. The British forces, led by General Kitchener, inflicted heavy casualties on the Mahdists, killing thousands and capturing many prisoners. This victory was a significant step towards the eventual conquest of Sudan by the British.
