A new discovery in the field of physics, namely the discovery of X-rays by Professor Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen of Würzburg, has created a great stir in the scientific world. These rays, so called because their nature is still unknown, are produced by a vacuum tube and are capable of passing through opaque bodies, such as wood, flesh, and metals, and producing a visible effect on a phosphorescent screen. They are not reflected or refracted, and they do not affect the eye directly. They are capable of producing an image on a photographic plate, and it is by this means that they have been studied.
The discovery was made on November 8, 1895, by Professor Röntgen, who was experimenting with cathode rays. He noticed that a screen coated with barium platinocyanide, which was placed near the vacuum tube, began to glow when the tube was in operation. He found that this glow was not due to the cathode rays themselves, but to some other invisible radiation that was being produced by the tube. He called this radiation X-rays.
