Father Livinsac, the same rights in the same regions.
It is now four months since I had news from p]urope and my family, and God knows when I shall hear again.
Province of Kohl, Rumbek, 17 ih October, 1878. — I had intended to send a letter to the EspJoratore by means of a post, but foreseeing that the navigation of the Nile Avould not yet be free and that the letter wouki therefore remain at Shambe, I Avill wait, as being safer, and send it when it will be certain to be forwarded. I had })repared two cases of ethnographical objects to be sent to the Geographical Society in Italy, but these I have also retained, fearing tliat they might be lost, like my provisions and my tAvent} years. In one of these cases are man}' things from Uganda, and in Italy people will be astonished to see articles manufactured with such diligence and really extraordinary neatness. The straw-work is not at all inferior to that made at Florence, and the tanning of the skins is worth}' of special attention. Among these objects is a skin " given by Sultan Mtesa to Emin Pasha when- the latter went to the Sultan's realm on an extraordinary mission, besides stuffs dyed with the rind of trees, tcrra-cotta pi]>es, and an infinity of other very curious articles. Here I have also made a small collection, and I hope to increase it by many things which have never yet been exported to Europe.
The day before yesterday I was awakened by loud cries, but knowing that the country is safe, I did not take the trouble to spring from my bed. In the morning \ was informed that a leopard had come to pay the station a visit, and after killing two dogs, hadretreated, finding it more advisable to return to the fields. These not very pleasant visits are frequent, and in many cases some victims have to be deplored.
Tliis skill is now in tlie Prehistoric Museum at Eome.
