THE EGYPTIAN SUDAN never came, and they prove that whilst the king of Egypt was declaiming to his followers on religious matters, and playing the high-priest, and offering up bloodless sacrifices, province after province, and city after city were being captured by the enemies of Egypt, who attacked her vassal princes with impunity.

In Egypt itself Amen-hetep IV. caused building and repairing operations to be carried out in many places, but in Nubia we find his name only in one -place, namely, Sulb. Here, by the entrance to one of the pylons,, are two reliefs in which the king is seen making offerings to the " Image " of his father " living upon earth," in whose honour the temple was built. As Amen-hetep IV. never went into Nubia, we must assume that this was the work of some of the temple officials who were on his father's foundation. At the death of the king, the cult of Aten declined in Upper Egypt, and the throne passed to successors who were faithful adherents of " Amen-Ra, the lord of the thrones of the Two Lands." Amen and his priests had triumphed.

Amen-hetep IV. was succeeded by Tut-finkh-Amen, a son of Amen-hetep III., who married a daughter of Amen-hetep IV.

called Ankh-s-en-pa-Aten ; this lady, after her father's death, changed her name to Ankh-s-en-Amen. The only work carried out in Nubia by the new king was the restoration of a temple built by his father at Gebel Barkal, and the erection in the same place of a temple to Amen, Tem of Heliopolis, and Aah, the Moon-god." We owe this information to an inscription on one of the two granite lions in the British Museum (No. 34), which were found at Gebel Barkal by Lord Prudhoe, and brought home and presented by him to the Trustees of that Institution in 1835. The fellow-lion (No. i) bears an inscription of Amenhetep III., wherein the temple which he built at Sulb is mentioned. It is probable that the lion inscribed with the name of Tut-ankh-Amen was begun by the father and finished by the son, ' See Lepsius, Denkmdler, Abth. iii., Bl. 1 10 /'.
