year. Whilst this officer was at Haifa he kept the temple clear but soon after his departure it became choked by the drift-sand which the north wind carried into it. In 1892 Captain H. G.

Lyons, R.E., cleared out the temple once again, but was not rewarded by the discovery of any object of importance. In recent years the British Commandants at Haifa, e.g., Colonel Hayes Sadler, have done much good work there, and in 1904 Sir Reginald Wingate made a grant of money for the purpose of PAINTINGS IN THE TEMPLE OF THOTHMES II. AND THOTHMES III. AT WADI HALFA.
