UNA SENT TO THE SUDAN Aamu-heru-sha,' i.e., "the Aamu, who are on the sand." He next sent into all the countries away to the south of Elephantine,' and enlisted the inhabitants in his army, and he brought " many times ten thousand " bowmen and spearmen to help him. He drew his allies from Setcher, and Khen-setcher, and Arthet, and from the negro-lands of Tcham, or Metcha, Amam, Uauat, Kaau, and Tathem ; at the head of all these the king set Una, who says that all the arrangements for the great campaign were in his hands. The contingent from each district was placed under the command of local governors and chiefs, but it was Una who gave the word which set the whole of the vast host in motion. In due course Una and his army forced their way through the land of the desert peoples (Heru sha), and conquered it, and then the work of destruction began. The Egyptians and their negro allies razed to the ground all the fortified buildings of the natives, which are represented as oval buildings with crenellations ; ' they cut down all the fruit trees ' and the vines, they set fire to everything which could be burned, they slew " many tens of thousands " of the natives, and over and above all this they captured alive a vast multitude of the people. Una's treatment of the rebels was so satisfactory to the king, and no doubt so profitable also, that his sovereign sent him through the land of the dwellers on the sand five times, and Una tells us explicitly that he acted in such a manner that His Majesty loved him " more than anything else.'

In fact, whenever there was any rising among the desert tribes, Unfi took boats loaded with troops and set out to harry the wretched folk with fire and sword. Whilst he was carrying on his work of repression of the "Heru sha," king Pepi I. died, but his successor approved of Una's deeds, and, having appointed him to be the bearer of his throne and sandals, raised him to the rank of a AZ prince, and made him governor of Upper Egypt. In this important office he performed his duties with the greatest s into the Sudan in the VI th Dynasty were Pepi-Nekht and Sabna.
