PYRAMIDS NOS. 9 AND 10 Pyramid No. g (Cailliaud I, Hoskins K, Lepsius No. 12). The sides of this pyramid at the base are between 40 and 41 feet long, and the number of layers of stone in the building is thirty-one, or thirty-two. The stones are large and well cut. The east face, owing to some internal settling, has " crumpled," and is in an insecure state ; if one or two stones were removed the whole side v/ould collapse. The chapel is massively built, and it and the pylon are in an excellent state of preservation. There are no sculptured reliefs on any of the walls of the chapel, and it seems that the building was never finished. It is possible that, owing to the " crumpling " of the east side, the tomb beneath the pyramid was never occupied. The height of the chapel is 9 feet. We cleared out the chapel, which was choked with stones and sand, and also the spaces outside its walls, where we found great numbers of stones piled up ; we also made a road on all four sides of the pyramid.

Pyramid No. 10 (Cailhaud K, Hoskins I, Lepsius No. 11). The base of the pyramid which once stood here is about 43 feet square. The pyramid has been almost entirely removed, and many of its casing stones may be seen in the two poorly built pyramids which stand near the base, on the east side. A portion of the core of the pyramid, which varies from 2 to 8 feet in height, still remains. The west side of the pyramid cannot be traced with exactness. No facts are available which throw any light on the disappearance of the pyramid, but it is probable that it collapsed in such a way that it was impossible to repair it, and that subsequent builders of pyramids employed the ruin as a quarry. The chapel, of which portions still remain, was 13 feet long, and 6 feet wide, and its walls were fully 3 feet thick. On the west wall was a group of three figures of Osiris, Isis, and Nephthys, in relief. On the north wall are still to be seen portions of the Judgment Hall of Osiris, and of a representation of the ceremony of trying the heart in the Balance. On the south wall, in flat relief, is a figure of the king, and near him is Isis standing on a lotus ; ministrants bearing offerings also appear. The outside of the chapel is without reliefs and inscriptions.
