C THE EGYPTIAN SUDAN will be noticed that the shekh pronounced Slatin's name " Salatin," and in doing so he wished to pay this distinguished man a great compHment, for " salatin " is the plural of " Sultan," i.e., " king," or "governor," and by this play of words he intended to express his belief that the power of all kings was in him. Slatin's escape from Omdurman the Khalifa also made a play of words on his name, and called him " Shayatin ; " now " shayatin " is the plural of " shetan/' i.e., devils," and by giving him this name the Khalifa expressed his opinion that Slatin was a whole legion of devils !
