PYRAMIDS AT GEBEL BARKAL best examples of Nubian tombs available for examination at Gebel Barkal, and it was here that excavations were carried on by me during the autumn and winter of 1897-8. An account of these excavations will be found on p. i6g.

The Sixth Pyramid of the group, Q, is about 38 ft. square at the base, but the upper portion is so much ruined that no useful guess can be made as to its height. Cailliaud states that the pylon was destroyed, but that the walls and roof of the chapel were standing, and that the walls had been covered with plaster, having figures DRAWING FROM THE NORTH WALL OF THE CHAPEL OF PYRAMID P.

In the upper register are the Scales of Judgment, and gods and goddesses bringing offerings for the dead, and in the lower men bringing flowers, &c.

[From Lepsius, Denkin'dler, Abth. V. BL 20, of the deceased painted upon it in bright crude colours. Hoskins speaks of "some remains of painting, rather indifferently executed," but Lepsius succeeded in producing very interesting copies of the painted figures, and, judging by the specimens of this kind of decoration which exist in other places in the Sildan, they are tolerably correct, and give a very good idea of the gaudy appearance which an ancient chapel at Gebel Barkal presented.
