¥ PYRAMIDS OF GEBEL BARKAL pyramids, which are marked in the plan opposite by the letters L-S ; of pyramid R the casing has wholly disappeared, and it must have been in an utterly ruined state in Cailliaud's time, for there is no trace of its existence in his map.

The following is a list of the bearings of these pyramids taken by Major Talbot, R.E., in 1897, from a prismatic compass, the variation of which has been determined by comparison with an astronomical azimuth ; but owing to the irregularity of the masonry they cannot be relied upon to nearer than 2°.
