Nizam al-Din Sultan Ali Mashhadi, who was called "the master of scribes" and "the royal scribe," was born in Mashhad. He was apparently summoned to Herat by Sultan Abu Sa'id Gurkani. After his death, he became famous and in the year... he was engaged in the court of Sultan Husayn Mirza Bayqara as a scribe and was a close companion for forty years. He was a scribe and companion to this prince and at the age of eighty-two, he was with Amir Ali Shir Navai in... and upon his death, he returned to Mashhad and died there. He is buried next to the shrine of Hazrat Reza.

Sultan Ali, in the Nasta'liq script, was a master, and his teachers were Sultan Muhammad Nur, Sultan Muhammad Khandan, Muhammad Abrashmi, Ala al-Din Muhammad, Zayn al-Din Mahmud, and Muhammad Qasim.
