VOYAGE TO KAGEI AND SHIPWRECK. 237 Leaving this place, we pitched our camp on the mainland, on the shore of a magnificent bay opposite the island of Kishaka. "We were now in a different district of Uzongora, this part being under the rule of Keitaba. The people were darker than those in the district of Keioza, and the dialect spoken by them varied somewhat from that of the latter province, and had fewer words in common with the Uganda language. The ordinary salutation of the people of Keioza was Kilembe, while here it was Smalige.
We were detained here several days by adverse winds, and left finally on July 30th. We passed along the western side of the island of Bumbire, which rises in the centre to a height of several hundred feet above the Nyanza, and appeared, from the Lake, bare and barren. That night was spent on the uninhabited island of Maiga, and the following day the island of Lubili (also uninhabited) was reached.
Here we remained a whole day, being detained by a storm, and I spent some time in exploring the place. A high ridge runs down its centre, rising almost perpendicularly from the water on the southern side to an altitude of about 150 feet ; it is covered with a dense forest and a luxuriant undergrowth of ferns and lycopodia. An open spot on the edge of the precipice afforded a glorious view of vast extent.
