UGANDA AND THE WAGANDA. 149 consequently in Uganda, where they are despised, it is almost impossible to induce a Mganda to tend cattle. These Wahuma are a very exclusive race ; they have a distinct language of their own, live in out-of-the-way villages, generally on the borders of the jungle, and rarely intermarry with the surrounding tribes.

There are a few "Wanyambo, or natives of the south of Uddu and Karagwe, to be found in Uganda. They are inferior in physique to both the tribes already mentioned (though probably they have an admixture of Wahuma blood in their veins), and speak a different language. They are generally cowherds. The last tribe which claims our attention is that of the Wasoga, who come from the country of Usoga to the east of Uganda. They are a brave, warlike race ; but have been gradually subdued by the Waganda, a large part of Usoga being under Mtesa's sway. They are a good deal darker than the Waganda, and generally wear their hair long. They are considered good musicians, and there are many of them in Mtesa's bands; and also a number of Wasoga women are scattered about the country in the harems of the various chiefs ; these are mostly prisoners taken in war and given as presents by Mtesa to his officers.
