The following clay was spent in waiting for Mtesa's men who were to accompany me, but who did not turn up till evening. I left Kubaga on January 2nd, 1878, and reached Ntebbi at noon the following day, the remainder of that day being spent in getting the Daisy ready for sea, and collecting provisions. We got off early in the morning of the 4th, with a light breeze from the N.E., and kept among the islands all day. At night the wind died completely away, so we anchored near an island, intending to wait for daylight to go on ; but, about midnight, a violent storm broke on us, and the men, fearing that the Daisy would drag her anchor (as the bottom was a bad one), begged me to go farther out, which I did, but in the darkness got on the top of a sandbank with only a few feet of water on it, and where there was a terrific swell : fearing, however, that we should get on the rocks, I anchored there, and spent the rest of the night tossing about in a most violent manner.

The storm left a good breeze behind it, and as soon as the east was grey, we weighed anchor and ran rapidly on for three or four hours. About noon we got clear of the islands, and then the breeze died suddenly away, a dead calm ensuing, relieved only by occasional puffs of wind ; and this continued all night, so that when we woke up on the morning of the 6th, we found that we had only made about four miles since the previous evening.
