The Mahdist War, which began in 1881, was a significant event in Sudanese history. It led to the overthrow of the Turco-Egyptian rule and the establishment of the Mahdist State. The war was characterized by fierce battles and a protracted struggle for control of the country. The Mahdist forces, led by Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, achieved several notable victories against the Anglo-Egyptian army, including the capture of Khartoum in 1885. However, the Mahdist State eventually fell to the Anglo-Egyptian forces in 1898, marking the beginning of the Anglo-Egyptian condominium.
