EAST AFRICA PROTECTORATE AND UGANDA (a) Great Britain , Germany, and the British East Africa Company, 1885–1891 OVER the territories in East Africa which, towards the end of the nineteenth century, were divided be tween Great Britain and Gerinany, the Sultan of 1 The ruler's proper title is Seyyid (meaning “ Lord ' ') , first ) taken by the sons of Ahmed bin Said. The title Imâm (meaning “ Leader of prayers ' ) was for centuries that of the ruler of Muscat , but was not taken by Seyyid Said in 1804, and has never been adopted by any of his descendants at Zanzibar. The title Sultán is strictly a misnomer , the English who came to Muscat at the end of the seventeenth century mistaking the ruler's per sonal name for a title. The name has clung to the rulers of Zanzibar ever since , but the Arab chiefs never give this title to the Seyyid.
