COLLAPSE OF THE MOHMUNDS AND MAMUNDS. 40\ Nawagai,the first on the night between the 19th and 20th of September,and the second,a more serious affair,on the following night. In this attack the hillmen,coveredby a heavy rifle fire, made repeated attempts to rush the camp,pushingcloseup to the shelter trenches onitsmargin, so that manyof them fell within ten yards of the defences. Every rush was repulsed. The loss in the camp was only one killed and eighteen wounded. Among these latter was General Wodehouse, commanding the 3rd Brigade.

Jarobi,the village of the HaddaMullah,captured/ theplace, anddestroyedhis mud-walledmosque. A few isolated skirmishes in the last days of September marked the finalflickering out of the Mohmund rising. By the beginning of October the tribe hadasked for terms, and hadbegun to surrender its arms.

Their neighbours, the Mamunds of Bajaur, heldout for a few days longer. On October ist General Jeffreys stormed the village of Agrah with a loss of fifty men, including two British officers killed and three wounded. The neighbouring villageof Badilai was attacked and destroyedunder thepersonaldirection of SirBindon Blood on the 3rd,with only trifling loss. This was the last fight north of the Malakand, the last of the Mamund tribessendingin their headmen to arrange a surrender the very next day. Thus, whathad at first threatened to be a very serious tribalrising in the hill country north of Peshawur had come to an end. But the reduction of the Afridis and Orakzais west of the frontier fortress, and the occupation of their stronghold in the Tirah Valley,proved a much moreserious and costly piece of work.

Next day, the enemy having dispersed after their failure, Sir BindonBlood— whose signallers had got into communication with General Elles andthePeshawur force— moved over the Passin hi;front andjoined handswith theotherdivision at Lokerai. Wodehouse had to leave the front, and handed his brigade over to General Graves. The 3rd Brigade was now added to Elles's division, and Sir Bindon Blood returned by Nawagai to assist General Jeffreys' brigade in its further operations.
