THE ANCIENTS.

When the wolf and the raven met, in the ancient wood, it was to consider the interests of the animal kingdom, and the wolf being the stronger, and the raven the more cunning, they came to an agreement. The two friends, the wolf and the raven, often met in the woods. One day they saw a flock of sheep, and the wolf said: "Let us go and eat them." The raven said: "I am afraid of the shepherd." "Do not fear," said the wolf, "I will kill the shepherd, and you will eat them all." The raven agreed, and they went to the flock. The wolf killed the shepherd, and they ate them all. But the raven was very greedy, and he ate too much, and he died. The wolf was very sad, and he said: "I will not eat any more flesh, and I will live on roots and berries." So the wolf lived on roots and berries, and he became very thin. One day, a fox saw the wolf, and he said: "Why are you so thin?" The wolf said: "I have eaten too much flesh, and I have died." The fox said: "That is not true, for you are alive. Come with me, and I will show you some food." The fox took the wolf to a rabbit hole, and they ate many rabbits. The wolf was very happy, and he said: "Thank you, my friend." The fox said: "You are welcome. And now, let us go and see if there are any more rabbits." So they went and ate many more rabbits.
