and South America, and bombardments of native villages in the Pacific, like those in the Samoan dispute. But if the book was not to be a work of inordinate length and
wearisome detail some selection had to be made.
The Chronological Index at the end of the volume will help to make clear the order of events.
Throughout, the best available sources of information, official and non-official, have been consulted. The author has to thank many friends, some of them actors in the
events related, for kindly assistance.
The maps and plans, with the one exception of the sketch on p. 72$ (The Shangani Patrol), are the work of the author.
