Introduction

Muhammad Ahmad '0>l\r, 'omda of the second khut of el Kamlin district and by race one of the Fung, wrote out the MS. here trans-

lated for me. He based it on documents in his possession, but it is obviously a precis rather than a copy, and some of the statements concerning the tribes, however true they may be, may have been added from his own knowledge or recollection and not have occurred in the MS.

I The coming of the Beni Ommayya to the Sudan was as follows :

Sulayman son of 'Abd el Malik son of Marwan entered the Sudan and Abyssinia and dwelt in them for a space; and afterwards he migrated to the mountains of the Fung and married the daughter of

the king Sendal el 'Ag: and they gained the ascendancy over those mountains for a [long] time, and there he begot his sons Ans and Daud. Daud was surnamed "Oudun" and Ans "Unsa"; and Unsa begot his son 'Omara Dunkas, who was the first of the kings of the Fung.
