For the first 60 miles the country on both banks is flat

prairie and marsh, with a few low forests and huge grasses. Nuer tribe, numerous villages, harmless people. Many crocodiles and hippopotamus. Birds and game, ostrich,

antelope, and lion numerous. Deleb palms ; floating vegetation occasionally met with. Banks, 12 to 18 feet

high, left bank highest; slow current; no trees right bank. Villages
