We have mentioned what happened with Awad Al-Karim Abu Sen, the leader of the Shukria tribe, and his refusal to join Al-Mahdi's call, and his retreat with his tribe to the desert of (Gereir), between the Blue Nile and the Atbara River. When Khartoum fell, the Mahdi sent an army of sixteen thousand fighters to the village of (Rafa'a) to march from there to (Gereir), where Awad Al-Karim Abu Sen was located. He had fled from Al-Mayshi and left his camp, heading for Omdurman. Upon his arrival there, he was informed that the Mahdi was in Khartoum. He crossed the river and sought refuge with Muhammad Salih Sanai. He presented himself to Al-Mahdi, placing a handful of earth on his neck as a sign that he had repented for his past actions and surrendered himself to the Mahdi in peace. Muhammad Salih Sanai went to Al-Mahdi and said, "I have guaranteed Awad Al-Karim, and I ask you to forgive his mistake and spare him punishment." Abdullah Al-Ta'aishi was present, and his face turned pale. He was about to rise from Al-Mahdi's مجلس to strike the man's neck before Al-Mahdi could speak about sparing him. Muhammad Salih Sanai restrained him.
