The incident of Korti and the killing of Sheikh Al-Mahdi.
When Sharif Muhammad arrived at Al-Hadi's camp, Mustafa Yawer Pasha informed him that they were preparing to advance on the troops. He marched against them with four hundred soldiers, a mix of regulars and Bashi-bazouks. The commander of the regulars was Officer Ahmed Effendi Sulwan, and the Bashi-bazouks were under the command of Nour El-Din Bey and Suliman Gabriel Bey.
When he approached Sheikh Al-Mahdi's camp, the troops fired their rifles, announcing their arrival to the Dervishes. They attacked the ranks of the soldiers, spilling blood until they were about a hundred meters away. A hundred of the Dervishes fell dead, and Sheikh Al-Mahdi was killed, along with Al-Gharbi, the preacher of the western tribes. Hassan and Sharif Khalifa, the preacher of Upper Egypt, escaped. The Dervishes fled in disarray, their unity shattered.
The number of Dervishes was about six thousand, of whom many were killed. Only one Bashi-bazouk officer was wounded by a bullet to the chest, but he recovered. This incident took place in Dhu al-Hijjah of the year 1301 AH.
The arrival of Kitchener Pasha in Dongola.
The government was concerned about the loyalty of Mustafa Yawer Pasha and the rest of the army, as news of the Mahdi's victories, which we will not detail here, had cast doubt. Officer Ahmed Effendi Sulwan told us that he had read in the newspapers that arrived from Egypt news of Mustafa Yawer Pasha and the army's submission to the Mahdi. The officers were complaining about the government, which had been negligent.
