This is a summary based on water requirements data presented by Mr. Molesworth, Inspector General, and Mr. Biedounia, Chief Engineer of the Projects Department.

Method of Data Collection Data was collected from farmers in all governorates of Egypt regarding the quantities of water needed for various crops and the times of water requirement. Numerous answers were received from farmers, analyzed, and results were deduced. The data included irrigation methods, depth of irrigation water in the fields, the percentage of different types of crops, and other information related to water supply. The collected information was then used to estimate the water needed for each feddan and each month.

The loss of water was also investigated. This loss occurs in the main canals, branch canals, and distribution canals, between the canal and the field to be irrigated. Since the coefficient of transmission for a canal is the ratio between the quantity of water flowing out and the quantity of water flowing in, the coefficients for each type of canal (main and branch) were multiplied together. The result was a water coefficient for the main canal, representing the ratio between the quantity of water reaching the field and the quantity of water at the entrance of the main canal.

Sources of Error a) Data collection errors: The data was collected by farmers. It is possible that the estimates were exaggerated, and the farmers tended to overestimate the water requirements.

b) Method of estimating lost water by multiplying coefficients leads to exaggeration. Each coefficient inherently includes a margin of safety. When these margins are multiplied together, the loss is excessively magnified.
