The political boundaries of Egypt are located far in the desert and encompass millions of feddans that could potentially be irrigated by the Nile. The total area of this land is approximately 2,000,000 feddans. The area of the Nile Valley within the political boundaries of Egypt has been surveyed by the Survey Department and found to contain 5,000,000 feddans. This is called the geographical area and includes the Fayoum Governorate, but it does not include the area of the valley south of Aswan. The geographical area is not entirely suitable for agriculture, as there are many areas on the edges of the desert and along the coast that are not suitable for cultivation, either because they are too high or because the soil is poor. If we exclude these areas unsuitable for agriculture, we are left with the cultivable area.

The cultivable area is approximately 5,000,000 feddans.

Based on this, the cultivable area is approximately 5,000,000 feddans.

It can be seen from this that the total cultivable area in Egypt, outside the Nile banks and above the level of the high flood within these boundaries, amounts to approximately 5,000,000 feddans.

The division of the geographical area of Egypt at present:

(A) Lower Egypt

1. Lands that do not require drainage: 5,000,000 feddans. 2. Lands that require drainage and irrigation: 5,000,000 feddans. 3. Lands that require reclamation: 5,000,000 feddans. 4. Lands allocated for fish farms: 5,000,000 feddans. 5. Lands above the high flood level. 6. Lands unsuitable for cultivation and not yet reclaimed.

Geographical area: 5,000,000 feddans.

(B) Upper Egypt

1. Lands irrigated by the basin irrigation system: 5,000,000 feddans. 2. Lands irrigated by the perennial irrigation system: 5,000,000 feddans. 3. Lands in the oases and plains irrigated by flood irrigation: 5,000,000 feddans. 4. Lands unsuitable for agriculture and lands not yet reclaimed: 5,000,000 feddans.

Total: 5,000,000 feddans.
