As for the ordinary cotton worm, it did not harm the crop as much as it did previously, even though it was abundant in many places. The Cotton Worm Committee, headed by His Excellency Business Hussein Pasha Kamel, was sent to some methods that were suggested to combat these two pests, and many experiments were conducted before consideration. In my previous report, I described the cotton rings that were established throughout the cotton-growing areas to help small farmers sell their cotton and protect them from the deception of merchants who cheat them. The experiments of 1912 showed that some of these rings were placed in unsuitable locations, while most of them were established in more suitable places, and the results were not uniform everywhere. The rings succeeded in some places with great success, meeting the need, and were not beneficial in other places due to lack of interest. However, the amount of cotton sold in them increased by 5,000 qintars compared to what was sold in 1912. In 1913, an agreement was reached with the provincial councils to sell the ordinary Agricultural Society's produce in the rings. This work succeeded completely, and its scope is expanding.
12 - Sugar and Other Crops The sugar season of 1914 is not expected to exceed the previous season in its yield. The amount of cane crushed by the Sugar and Refining Company reached 741,000 tons, compared to 537,000 tons in the previous year, and the extracted sugar reached 12.8 percent. The company is conducting experiments to introduce a new variety of cane that is expected to be less affected by weather changes, which sometimes causes the cane to reach maturity.
The yield of rice, maize, and local millet was below average, but prices did not rise above the usual due to the large quantities of grain and flour imported from abroad. The millet season was somewhat damaged by the lack of water. The season was delayed in some places and did not reach its full potential. Experiments were conducted in four different locations to determine the relative benefit of using silk treatments and soda treatments and cyanides. It appeared that silk treatments and soda treatments were more effective than the latter. The yield increased significantly with silk treatments in one experiment. Experiments are now being conducted to determine the benefit of Egyptian fertilizers in their natural state.
