Chapter One On the Seizure of Sudan by the Upper Mahdist Family The sun of Egypt returned and shone brightly after it had been eclipsed for ages. This was due to the rise of its great man, of noble perception, grand ambition, decisive resolve, and strong will, the founder of military reforms and the establisher of administrative systems in the Egyptian territory, the late Muhammad Ali Pasha, the head of the Upper Mahdist Family. In the year 1819 AD, it occurred to him to expand the borders of his kingdom and annex the neighboring southern lands, and to enforce his rule over the tribes therein whose systems were not yet established. It appears that he desired this and proceeded with his choice for four reasons. The first was to expand sustenance for his supporters.
