From Awlil to the city of Sijilmasa, about 40 stages. The caravans travel from the city of Timbuktu to the city of Barisi, on the Nile, eastward, 13 stages. The city of Barisi is a small city without walls, but it is like a broken fortress. Its people are nomadic traders, and they are under the obedience of the Timbuktu ruler. To the south of Barisi is the land of Lamlam, and between them is about 10 days. The people of Barisi, Salih, and Timbuktu, and Ghana, raid the lands of Lamlam, capture its people, and bring them to their lands, where they sell them to incoming traders. The traders then take them to other regions. In all the land of Lamlam, there are only two small cities: one is called Mallal, and the other is called Dhu Wiham. The distance between these two cities is about 4 days. Its people, as mentioned by the people of that region, are Jews. They are predominantly infidels and ignorant. All the people of the land of Lamlam, when one of them reaches puberty, mark his face and temples with fire, and this is a sign for them. Their lands and all their settlements are along the Nile. South of the land of Lamlam, there is no known settlement. The land of Lamlam extends westward to the land of Maqara, eastward to the land of Naqara, northward to the land of Ghana, and southward to the empty land. Their language does not resemble the language of crows or the language of singers. From Barisi, the learned one mentioned it to Ghana, eastward, 11 days. It is in the middle of the road to the city of Salih and Timbuktu. Likewise, from the city of Barisi to Adasht is 11 stages. Adasht is north of Barisi. There is nothing in the land of the Sudan of fresh fruits, except what is brought to it from the dates of the land of Sijilmasa or the land of Rab. The people of Wazan, the desert dwellers, bring it to them. The Nile flows in this land from Barisi.
