The city was miles, but this was not completed. When the Almoravids overcame the king and it became theirs and in their hands, they completed bringing this water into the city and made fountains near Dar al-Hajar, which is the enclosure where the palace is, isolated and separate. The city is outside this palace. The length of the city is less than a mile, and its width is close to that. Three miles from Marrakesh, there is a river called Tensift. It is not large, but its flow is constant. In winter, it carries a great flood that leaves nothing behind. The Commander of the Muslims, Ali ibn Yusuf, built a wondrously constructed and expertly made bridge over this river, after bringing craftsmen from Al-Andalus and knowledgeable builders. They erected it and perfected its construction until it was complete. Then, it did not last long, only a few years, before the flood came and carried away most of it, leaving its pillars and destroying it, throwing it into the vast sea. This valley receives water from springs and sources emanating from Mount Drn, in the direction of the city of Aghmat Aylan. Aghmat Aylan is a small city at the foot of the aforementioned Mount Drn, to the east of the previously mentioned Aghmat Warika, with six miles between them. In this city live the Jews of that land. It is a beautiful, fertile city, full of blessings. The Jews did not reside in the city of Marrakesh by the order of our commander Ali ibn Yusuf, nor did they enter it except during the day and depart in the evening. Their entry into the city during the day was only for specific matters and services that pertained to him. If one of them was found to have stayed overnight, his property and blood were considered forfeit. They almost avoided staying overnight in the city, as a safeguard for their property and lives. The people of Marrakesh eat locusts, and they are sold there daily, both those from below and above.
