It was fertile and had valleys, villages, and settlements, but now all of that is scarce in and around it. The settlements of the Barbra are around it, dealing with the Arabs. Most of their crops are wheat and barley. Its affairs are managed by its sheikhs. To the east of it, about 12 days' journey, is Jabal Awras, whose people are subservient to their neighbors. From the city of Baghay to Qastaliyyah is 3 stages. From Baghay to Tibnah al-Zab is 4 stages. From Baghay to the city of Masḥaylinah is 4 stages. This city is called Tūzar. It has a strong wall and a great abundance of date palms, and its dates are plentiful, surpassing those of the land of Ifriqiyah. It also has large, good, and pleasant citrons, and most of its fruits are in a moderate state. Its vegetables are abundant, reaching the utmost in quantity and quality. Its water is not good, nor is it satisfying. The price of food there is often high because it is brought to it, and the cultivation of wheat and barley is scarce. To its south-east is the city of al-Ḥammah, and between them is a short stage. The water of al-Ḥammah is not good, but it is of various kinds, and its people drink it. It has many date palms and abundant dates. From there to Ta'yūs is about 40 miles. It is a beautiful city situated between it and Qafṣah. Qafṣah is a prosperous city with crops of henna, cumin, and karkubā'. It has date palms and good dates, and a variety of fine, soft butter. From Ta'yūs to the city of Qafṣah is one stage. The city of Qafṣah is a beautiful city with a wall and a flowing river whose water is better than the water of Masḥaylinah. In its center is the spring called al-Tilmidhah. It has bustling markets, many shops, and established crafts. It has a great abundance of date palms, including various kinds of wonderful dates. It has Jabal Jannāt, gardens, and inhabited palaces where various crops of henna, qist, and cumin are cultivated. Its people are Berbers, and most of them speak the Berber language.
