Praise be to God, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of God, may God's prayers and peace be upon him. As for Sudan, I was the first to accompany Gordon Pasha in the service of Sudan, and the last to bid him farewell at the last moments of his life in his capital. I was the first Egyptian prisoner to be captured by Kitchener Pasha, and the last of the prisoners of war to return to my homeland. The events of Sudan during this period, which spanned the time between the first actions of Gordon Pasha, in whose grave he lies, and the last actions of Kitchener Pasha, who flew to his fame and spread his name, are worthy of consideration due to the vicissitudes of time. The greatest of them is the lesson that man learns how the dreamer errs in his judgment, how his reign is overthrown by injustice, how the record of order is closed and replaced by chaos of judgments among people, how the ignorant are guided, and the misguided are led astray. Rather, how a great man offers himself as a sacrifice for the sake of his people's objectives, and how the steadfast steps in the politics of nations are preserved by this great sacrifice for their day.
