The wild elephants were shot with spears, and the ruler took their tusks and ate their meat, as it was very delicious and desirable. With this, the ruler saved the meat that was brought to him. Besides this, the equatorial regions do not have beasts of burden, and carrying heavy loads from one place to another is difficult. These elephants performed the function of beasts of burden. In times of war, they carried ammunition, which was one of the most important needs, as one elephant could carry more than five camels.
And besides all this, when I conquered some lands to bring them under the ruler's obedience and carried loads on these elephants, the inhabitants of every region were astonished and met us with amazement, asking how these people subdued the elephant, which is the largest animal, and how they tamed it to their will and led it like a sheep. When I reached the lands of the Mussa'ah, they met me with submission and surrender, and their kings declared that they could not fight me or my soldiers who had tamed the elephants. This was my experience with all the lands I conquered with elephants. The soldiers named all the lands and tribes that submitted to the ruler's obedience out of fear of the elephants as "the lands of elephants" and "the tribes of elephants." The inhabitants called the ruler "the master of elephants."
After I crossed the equator, Amin Effendi Pasha thought it wise to tame the domestic elephants to distinguish them from wild elephants and to conduct scientific analyses. He did so, and look at this absurdity.
At the equator, there were two thousand bulls that were tamed with halters until they were capable of carrying loads and being ridden like camels. He slaughtered them all. If the bulls and oxen had remained, most of those who accompanied the Italian traveler would have perished, as we will mention when we discuss the equator, God willing.
