The Battle of El Quteina and the Death of Sati Bey El Quteina is a village south of Khartoum on the banks of the White Nile. Sati Bey, who was a slave trader and a former employee of the Egyptian army in Bahr el Ghazal, was serving when Gordon arrived in Khartoum. Gordon dispatched him with a contingent of Bashi-bazouks and some troops from the Egyptian army who were in Bahr el Ghazal.

Gordon was informed that a man named Abdallah, from the people of El Quteina, had gathered a force from his village in late Shawwal, intending to march on Khartoum. Sati Bey was then assigned with his troops on two steamers to investigate these gatherings.

When the two steamers returned to El Quteina, Abdallah and his men launched a fierce attack on Sati Bey. He held his ground and repelled them several times. They continued to fight until Sati Bey was shot and killed. His soldiers fled with the two steamers.

They returned to Khartoum.

The Battle of El Eilafun El Eilafun is a village on the banks of the Blue Nile, one day's journey from Khartoum. After the defeat of the Mahdists at the Battle of Omdurman, they went to the village of Sheikh El Obeid. They negotiated with him, and he issued a proclamation calling for help from the tribes. About ten thousand fighters gathered around him. Sheikh Madawi sent to El Eilafun to rally its people and the people of the surrounding villages. About five thousand fighters then assembled and camped in El Eilafun.
