A private letter from the sister of General Gordon Pasha.
From the editor's preface: When we began printing this preface, we received the following letter: From Miss M. M. Gordon, May 1, 1891.
My dear Fawzi Pasha, I am the sister of the late General Gordon Pasha, and I have been eager since my visit to Hernyoville to write to you. I have finally obtained a copy of the Egyptian Gazette, which contains a summary of a conversation with me. Although it is sad, it is also useful and pleasant. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the attention you have shown and for your remembrance of the late Gordon with the sincerity and loyalty with which he served him in life and after death. I have a book by Newbold, and I know from it the extent of my interest in everything related to that painful matter and its tragic end. Therefore, I would like to hear from you everything you can tell me about your chief and friend. Do you have a picture of Gordon? If not, I will send you one if you wish. I hope that I will know everything about my brother's friends who served him faithfully during his lifetime. Is the gardener still alive? I hope to hear from you soon.
(The final conclusion) Helen Gordon.
We have placed a picture of this book in the preface of our book to be like a question, the answer to which is at the end of this section, which, although sad, is useful and pleasant. (Ibrahim Fawzi)
