Their impregnable fortress was the mountain fortress of "Death," meaning the refuge of eagles, due to its impregnability and difficult access. It is a fortress about sixty *farkh* north of Qazvin. Its followers were called "Fedayeen" because they organized themselves for self-sacrifice. They taught children to conceal themselves by death. Among their aims was to leave no one from their enemies on the face of the earth. The author of the book "Al-Firaq" said, "The harm of the Isma'ilis to Islam is greater than the harm of the Jews, Christians, and Magians, and even greater than the harm of the materialists and the harm of the Antichrist who will appear at the end of time." It is narrated that among their teachings, particularly their secrets, was the abandonment of religious laws and licentiousness, as exemplified by the saying: "Take the tambourine, O lady, and strike it, and sing joyfully, then be delighted. The prophet of Banu Hashim has passed, and this is the prophet of the Arabs. Every prophet who passed had a law, and this prophet... If people pray, do not fast. If they fast, eat and drink. And do not seek the wellspring at Safa, nor the visit to the grave to drink... And do not prevent the soul from the needy, whether relatives or strangers. For when you have resolved this relative, you have become forbidden to the father."
