List of Languages Spoken in the Southern Sudan.

Note. , Our present knowledge of the linguistic situation is not sufficient to justify a definite grouping of the various language units found in the Southern Sudan. Though certain languages are evidently related to each other, others seem to be isolated, while of a considerable number little more is known than the names.

Dinka, Nuer, and Shilluk are closely related in phonetics as well as in structure and vocabulary, and it is probable that Burun also belongs to this group. Similarly, Bari, Latuko, and Dongotono are clearly interrelated, and while forming a group of their own, they also show a distinct affinity with the Dinka-Nuer-Shilluk group.
