And the Lord said, "O my Lord, grant me a righteous offspring." So We gave him good news of a boy, forbearing. And when he attained the age of working with him, he said, "O my son, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you. So see what you think." He said, "O my father, do what you are commanded. You will find me, if God wills, among the patient." So when they both submitted and he laid him down on his forehead, We called out to him, "O Abraham, you have fulfilled the vision." Thus do We reward the doers of good. Indeed, that was a clear trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice. And We left for him among later generations: "Peace be upon Abraham." Thus do We reward the doers of good. Indeed, he was of Our believing servants. And We gave him good news of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous. And We blessed him and Isaac. And among their offspring are the doers of good and those who clearly wrong themselves. And We had certainly favored Moses and Aaron. And We saved them and their people from the great distress. And We aided them so they became the victors. And We gave them the clear Scripture. And We guided them to the straight path. And We left for them among later generations: "Peace be upon Moses and Aaron." Thus do We reward the doers of good. Indeed, they were of Our believing servants. And indeed, Elias was among the messengers. When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allah? Do you call upon Ba'l and abandon the best of creators - Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?" And they denied him, so they will surely be punished, except for the chosen servants of Allah. And We left for him among later generations: "Peace be upon Elias." Indeed, he was of Our believing servants. And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers. When he fled to the laden ship. And he drew lots, and he was among the losers. And the fish swallowed him, and he was blameworthy. And had he not been of those who exalt Allah, he would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected. But We cast him ashore, and he was among the sick. And We caused to grow over him a plant of gourd. And We sent him to [his people] one hundred thousand or more. And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment for a time. And ask them, [O Muhammad], about the one who built a dwelling in a region far from the sea, and it was said to him, "How do you build this while it is ruined?" He said, "I will build it as Allah has willed, and He taught me." And they said, "O our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers." And when Moses said to his people, "Remember the favor of Allah upon you when He delivered you from the people of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with evil torment and were slaughtering your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord." And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe." And Moses said, "If you and all those on earth should disbelieve, then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy." Has there not come to you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and 'Ad and Thamud and those after them? None knows them except Allah. Their messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths and said, "Indeed, we reject what you have been sent with, and indeed we are in grave doubt about that to which you summon us." Their messengers said, "Is there doubt about Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth? He invites you that He may forgive you of your sins, and He may delay [your punishment] for a specified term." They said, "You are not but human beings like us who wish to turn us away from what our fathers worshipped. So bring us a clear authority." Their messengers said to them, "We are only human beings like you, but Allah bestows favor upon whom He wills of His servants. And it is not for us to bring you authority except by permission of Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely. And why should we not rely upon Allah while He has guided us to our [good] ways? And we will surely be patient against whatever harm you may inflict upon us. And upon Allah let the believers rely." And those who disbelieved said to their messengers, "We will surely drive you out of our land, or you must return to our religion." So their Lord inspired them, "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers, And We will surely cause you to dwell in the land after them. That is for whoever fears My standing [position] and My warning." And they sought victory, and disappointment resulted for them, and every obstinate transgressor met destruction. Hell is before him, and he will be given to drink of festering water. He will gulp it, but he can hardly swallow it, and death will come to him from every place, but he is not to die. And before him is a harsh punishment. The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes on which the wind blows fiercely on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] anything of what they earned. That is the extreme error. Do you not see that Allah has created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can remove you and bring forth a new creation. And that is not difficult for Allah. And they will emerge [for judgment] before Allah all together, and the weak will say to those who were arrogant, "Indeed, we were followers of yours, so can you avail us anything against the punishment of Allah?" They will say, "If Allah had guided us, we would have guided you. It is all the same for us whether we cry out or are patient; we will not escape." Indeed, Allah has judged between them, and they will return to Him.
